About the CCA
The Company Chemists' Association provides a forum for the large businesses engaged in community pharmacy to work together to help create an environment where pharmacy can flourish and providers compete in a fair and equitable way. We aim to:
- Represent our members
- Empower our members to understand the changing policy environment; and
- Influence that policy environment.
Today, the CCA has nine companies in membership. They are: Boots, The Co-operative Pharmacy, Lloydspharmacy, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Wm Morrison Supermarkets, Asda, Rowlands Pharmacy and Superdrug. Between them, our members own over 6,400 pharmacies representing almost 50% of the pharmacies in the United Kingdom.
The CCA also has eight associate members with whom it works in close partnership on areas of common interest.
Founded in 1898 as The Drug Companies Association Limited, the original seven members of the CCA included Boots, which then traded as Boots, Cash Chemists Ltd (Western). The Association's main objective was to support and protect the character, status and interests of its members who 'carried on the business of chemists and druggists'. The CCA has always been influential in ensuring that policy and regulation enables multiple pharmacy to expand, and it has actively championed the position of corporate pharmacy on many issues.
Today, with the CCA's professional profile higher than it has been in the past, the Association is consulted extensively on pharmacy issues by the government and other professional bodies, and its influence is felt at both a national and local level.
The CCA is formally represented on the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, Community Pharmacy Scotland and Community Pharmacy Wales, and on statutory local pharmaceutical representative bodies across the United Kingdom.
The CCA is a founding partner in the Health Policy Forum, a pan pharmacy think tank that champions innovative primary care policy thinking. The CCA is one of four national pharmacy organisations that supports the All Party Pharmacy Group.
The expertise, experience and commitment to community pharmacy of CCA member companies is widely respected. This reflects the importance placed by our members on working together collaboratively to ensure the future vitality and viability of the community pharmacy sector.
